Service Outage Hits Blackberry Users in Africa and Europe

Blackberry yesterday suffered a major system outage where the users were unable to access some of its key services. The outage was experienced in its Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA) area. The company, Research In Motion, admitted the problem without much details on the cause of the failure.

?Some users in Europe, Middle East Africa are experiencing issues with their BlackBerry service,? it said on its twitter account. ?We are investigating and apologise for any inconvenience,? it added. Last October, another system-wide failure of the service left tens of millions of frustrated BlackBerry users on five continents without email, instant messaging and browsing.

Such outages might compel consumers to look for other options that are increasingly available in the market. In Kenya (and globally), RIM has lost much ground in the last years with the widespread use of Google?s Android operating system. It has also been losing market share in North America which is traditionally one of its strongest markets to Apple?s iPhone.
