NEW YORK (AP) ? Apple shares plunged Thursday after the company reported quarterly results that point to growth slowing after five blowout years.
The stock was down $53.55 or 10 percent, at $460.46 in midday trading.
Apple Inc. is still the world's most valuable company, a position it's held for more than a year. It's now worth just 3.5 percent more than No. 2 Exxon Mobil Corp, however.
Late Wednesday, Apple reported October-December earnings that were flat compared with the year before. Sales grew 18 percent from the year before, but the startup of production lines for multiple new products like the iPhone 5 and iPad Mini held back profits.
Of more concern to investors is Apple sales growth forecast for the current quarter of around 7 percent ?far from the 50-percent-plus rate it's often hit in recent years. Apple usually lowballs its forecasts, but Chief Financial Officer Peter Oppenheimer indicated that it's moving toward providing more realistic figures from now on.
Analysts believe Apple is unable to fully capitalize on the global smartphone boom with just one new ?and very expensive? phone model every year. There has been speculation among company-watchers that Apple may launch a cheaper iPhone, or a premium model with a bigger screen, but CEO Tim Cook put a damper on those rumors in his comments on a conference call following the report.

Timelapse of the night sky with DSLR photography is the rage these days. Set this to music with an interesting landscape and we have some of the most impressive videos out there on the internet.
Gavin Heffernan with Sunchaser Pictures specializes in this type of night sky work. His latest was taken in Death Valley on December 13, 2012, the night of the Geminid meteor shower, an incredible planetary alignment, and a bit of excitement as some sort of UFO seems to circle through the star trails several times (this shows up at 1:30-1:35). Take a look.
From their description:
The Geminids get crazy as the sun comes up (2:20-2:35) but you can spot a bunch more throughout, if you look closely ? or here?s a nice shot. There?s also some passing planets (1:15-1:30 and 2:15-2:25). I think these are Jupiter and Mars(?), but maybe some smart astronomer out there can verify?
The ?UFO? appears at (1:30-1:35) and makes three broad circular sweeps over the desert. Though in timelapse it appears to be moving fast, consider the 5 seconds = about 50 minutes, so it?s creeping. There was no sound, so it definitely wasn?t a helicopter. Closer picture here. It can also be seen cutting through the circular star trails in the shot used above!
There are details on how the video was captured at their vimeo site if you want to learn more.

PITTSBURGH (AP) -- Natural gas company EQT Corp. posted sharply lower net income for the fourth quarter because natural gas prices fell, but strong sales and an increase in gas reserves buoyed shares Thursday.
Net income for the fourth quarter fell 47 percent to $48 million on revenue of $490 million. When adjusted to remove the effect of an interest rate hedge and expenses relating to the sale of a retail division, the company earned 48 cents per share for the quarter.
Analysts polled by FactSet expected the company to earn an adjusted 44 cents per share on sales of $423 million.
EQT shares rose $1.28, or 2.2 percent, to $60.90 in afternoon trading.
A boom in U.S. natural gas production and mild winter temperatures that reduced heating demand have increased supplies of natural gas, and lowered prices.
For the quarter, the company's revenue per thousand cubic feet of gas fell 16 percent from $5.22 to $4.39. For the full year, average prices fell 21 percent, the company said.
Company revenue for the year was flat compared with 2011 at $1.6 billion. The company's net income fell 62 percent to $183 million. The company's results were inflated in 2011, however, because of sales of a pipeline and processing center.
After adjusting for these one-time items, the company's per share earnings fell 32 percent to $1.49, from $2.19.
But for the year the company's natural gas production rose 33 percent to a record 256 billion cubic feet, driven by an 85 percent increase in production from the Marcellus shale in Pennsylvania.
The company's proved reserves of natural gas ? an important indication of what the company can hope to produce in the future ? increased 12 percent to 6 trillion cubic feet.

RAMALLAH, West Bank (Reuters) - Israel's electoral nudge to the center may limit Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's freedom to set policy toward Iran and the Palestinians, but few in the Middle East expect a marked retreat from the premier's hawkish approach.
Tuesday's vote cost Netanyahu's bloc a quarter of its seats but still gave him and traditional allies on the right an edge over challengers to the left; defying expectations of a surge by religious hardliners, it handed second place to a new centrist party and prompted the premier to promise a broad coalition.
But despite demands from the center that he renew talks with the Palestinians and focus on curing domestic ills rather than threatening to attack Iran's nuclear program, few of Israel's neighbors saw much chance of Netanyahu changing his discourse.
"There isn't any center or center-right party which can change substantively the negotiating position with the Palestinians," said Rami Khouri at the American University of Beirut. "So I don't see any chance of breakthrough."
Michael Stephens at the Royal United Services Institute in Doha agreed: "It does not move the state of Israel closer to any sort of pragmatic government that Arab states can work with.
"There is too much baggage and little goodwill toward (Netanyahu) for the pendulum to swing towards a more favorable view of Israel anytime soon," he said.
Preliminary results gave the largest number of seats to Netanyahu's Likud-Israel Beitenu bloc, which has supported expanding settlements in the occupied West Bank. Jewish Home, whose charismatic leader Naftali Bennett has called for annexing West Bank land outright, gained seats at Likud's expense.
However, the surprise second place for centrist newcomer and former TV host Yair Lapid puts pressure on Netanyahu to bring him into a broader coalition and heed his calls for peace talks.
But in Ramallah, West Bank administrative base of the Palestinian Authority, the results failed to impress:
"Irrespective of the nature of the Israeli coalition or fabric of politics in Israel - who's in and who's out of office - the requirements for peace will not change," Saeb Erekat, the top Palestinian peace negotiator, told Reuters.
"To revive peace talks, Israel must stop settlement activity, release prisoners and end the occupation, withdrawing behind the 1967 borders and living side by side with the state of Palestine."
Samer Rantissi, a local engineer, was equally pessimistic: "What do the Jews' election have to do with us? We have lost hope that changes will arise from these elections," he said.
"We hope for peace, but it still looks far away."
PEACE STILL DISTANT
That view - which is shared by many Israelis, though they tend to blame Palestinians for the impasse - appeared to echo around the Middle East.
"Netanyahu's victory will not help solve the problem between the Arabs and Israel," said Marad al-Hamadi, 22, who runs a grocery store in the Yemeni capital Sanaa.
Laith Jassim, a mobile phone shop owner in the Iraqi capital Baghdad, agreed: "No matter who wins in Israeli elections, anyone who comes to power is against us".
Israel has occupied the West Bank and East Jerusalem since capturing them in the 1967 Middle East War. Successive left-wing and right-wing Israeli governments have allowed Jewish settlements to expand on the occupied territories ever since.
Their continued expansion was cited by Palestinians for the breakdown of direct peace talks with Israel in 2010. Israel says rockets from the Hamas-run Gaza Strip, and the schism between Hamas and the PA in the West Bank, have undermined relations.
European officials have particularly condemned the planned expansion of Israeli settlements in East Jerusalem following a successful Palestinian bid to have Palestine recognized as an "observer state" in the U.N. General Assembly on November 29.
IRAN
Netanyahu shrugged off his party's poor showing and immediately pledged to stop Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons.
He sees Tehran's nuclear program as a threat to Israel's existence. Iran denies any ambition to develop or acquire atomic weapons, saying its nuclear industry is purely civilian and that Israel, assumed to have nuclear armaments, is a threat to peace.
Meir Javedanfar, lecturer in Iranian politics at the Interdisciplinary Center at Herzliya in Israel, said Netanyahu will aim to ensure Western powers continue their pressure on Tehran, so his rhetoric is likely to remain hostile to Iran.
"It also serves as a distraction," said Javedanfar.
"Netanyahu believes that the more he says 'Iran', the less others say 'Palestine', which is exactly what he wants. A Palestinian state is not in Netanyahu's interest."
Abdelkhaleq Abdalla, a political scientist in the United Arab Emirates, did not see Netanyahu's stance against Iran as indicating a fully fledged plan to start bombing nuclear sites.
"He will play the game of exerting pressure on the Americans and international community to maintain the tight sanctions," Abdalla said. "But I don't see war coming in 2013."
Palestinian officials say Britain and other European states are looking into reviving peace talks in 2013 based on a Palestinian state on the 1967 lines with mutually agreed land swaps, but that no concrete proposal has yet been offered.
Palestinian misgivings toward Netanyahu are so deep that many officials doubt any government he leads can embrace change.
"If Netanyahu wants to deal with the international community - which I doubt - he might enter into a coalition with the Labour party or Lapid," said Mohammed Shtayyeh, a senior ally of President Mahmoud Abbas. But he added: "We don't see that (Netanyahu) is a partner for the peace process."

PARK CITY, Utah (AP) ? Roger Corman has been to the Cannes and Venice film festivals. But for some reason, the independent filmmaker who has nearly 400 movies to his credit has missed the Sundance Film Festival ? until now.
The video-game tale "Virtually Heroes" is the first Corman production to premiere at the indie-cinema showcase, appropriately playing Sundance's midnight-movie program of way-out horror, comedy and action.
True to Corman's low-budget approach, "Virtually Heroes" was made for less than $500,000 by blending combat footage from the producer's previous Vietnam war movies with a new story about two self-aware video-game characters (Robert Baker and Brent Chase) battling the Vietcong.
"I thought if I could find a way to use the big battle scenes from all of these pictures and put it together in a new picture and shoot just a short period of time to tie them all together, I could get a big-looking picture for very little money," Corman, 86, said in an interview alongside "Virtually Heroes" director G.J. Echternkamp.
Corman's films usually are considered schlock that falls somewhere well below B-movie grade. In fact, he's been called the "Orson Welles of the Z-movie."
But Corman felt director Echternkamp had come up with a clever twist that made "Virtually Heroes" right for Sundance. So he contacted festival officials, who agreed.
The movie's heroes come to question the reason for their existence in a world where they keep fighting the same battles and die over and over. It also features "Star Wars" hero Mark Hamill as an Obi-Wan Kenobi-style mentor dispensing wisdom to one of the soldiers.
While "Virtually Heroes" is his first Sundance premiere, Corman was the subject of the 2011 festival documentary "Corman's World: Exploits of a Hollywood Rebel," examining the nearly 60-year career of the maverick who helped launch the directing careers of Francis Ford Coppola, Martin Scorsese, Jonathan Demme, Ron Howard and James Cameron.
Corman's films include such cult hits as "The Little Shop of Horrors," ''Grand Theft Auto," ''Piranha" and "Death Race 2000." In 2009, he received an honorary Academy Award for lifetime achievement in independent film.
Echternkamp got the "Virtually Heroes" directing job with a little help from his mom, who was Corman's assistant. A documentary filmmaker making his narrative feature debut, Echternkamp likes the sound of it when Corman calls him the latest in a line of filmmakers who got their start in the prolific producer's camp.
"I'd love to be the next of those guys. But there's also guys you've hired who haven't become one of those guys," Echternkamp told Corman. "So I hope I'm one of the good ones and not one of the bad ones."

Last year, a team of researchers at Brown University discovered that certain skin cells use a light-sensitive receptor found outside of the eye to sense ultraviolet light and quickly begin pumping out melanin to protect against DNA damage. In a new study, lab members identify a key player in that biomolecular chain of events that could someday become a pharmacological target for improving this protective response.
The new discovery, published the week of Jan. 21 in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, is that human melaoncyte skin cells rely on an ion channel called TRPA1 to allow a flood of calcium ions into the cells when they are exposed to UVA light. The resulting abundance of calcium ions signals the cell to begin making melanin, the pigment responsible for the tanning response in people.
Several experiments described in the paper show that TRPA1, which is known from a number of other appearances elsewhere in the body, is an essential step in the skin's response to UVA light, said senior author Elena Oancea, assistant professor of medical science in the Department of Molecular Pharmacology, Physiology, and Biotechnology at Brown.
As a matter of basic science, the finding strengthens the evidence of a striking parallel between the skin's response to UVA light and the way the eye detects light.
"Its exciting because it confirms this phototransduction pathway is similar to those found in the eye. It consists of a light-sensitive receptor, molecular signaling cascade, and an ion channel," Oancea said. "The involvement of an ion channel makes this pathway a lot more like other phototransduction pathways."
In other parts of the body, TRPA1 has been shown to help detect pungent but benign chemicals, such as those in intensely flavorful foods. Oancea and lead author Nicholas Bellono said the chemical sensitivity of TRPA1 offers the intriguing possibility that it could become a target for experiments to boost melanin production.
"TRPA1 ion channels are involved in the detection of pungent chemicals such as cinnamaldehyde, wasabi, and mustard oil, and we've now found it's important for this melanin response," Bellono said. "There is a possibility that we can pharmacologically alter pigmentation through regulation of this ion channel."
Oancea and Bellono emphasized, however, that people who go out in the sun should always take widely recommended precautions to protect their skin, such as using high-SPF commercial sunscreens or wearing protective hats and clothing.
Finding the channel
From the prior research in Oancea's lab, Bellono knew he was looking for some kind of molecular pathway that would start with a light sensitive receptor and trigger an elevated level of calcium ions in the melanocytes.
It seemed possible that a TRP ion channel would be involved because TRPs are involved in phototransduction elsewhere in the body that lead to an increase in intracellular calcium. There are, however, many types of TRP channels, and the molecular identity of the UVA-activated channel in melanocytes was not apparent. Oancea confessed that she even suspected another as the culprit. But many experiments later, the team hit on TRPA1 and amassed considerable evidence to confirm its vital role.
In one experiment, for example, they treated melanocytes with "antagonist" chemicals known to block TRPA1 activity. They then exposed the cells to UVA light and measured the resulting electrical response. The cells blocked with the antagonists had 80 to 90 percent reduction in current compared to the unhindered cells.
They used a similar technique of specifically blocking TRPA1 activity to show that the ion channel contributes greatly to the presence of calcium ions after UVA exposure compared to unhindered melanocyte cells. They also found melanocytes produce little or no melanin following exposure to UVA when TRPA1 is blocked.
They did not, however, do experiments to see whether adding TRPA1 stimulating substances could increase melanin production.

U.S. markets were closed on Monday for a public holiday.?
Despite stronger-than-expected earnings results from major companies, including big banks, at the start of the quarterly reporting season, many investors are worried that other reports will reflect economic uncertainty in the fourth quarter.?
"The market has been pleased with earnings thus far, and it is encouraging to see a cyclical company like DuPont show revenue strength, but I'm waiting on more tech and energy earnings until I come down one way or the other on this season," said Adam Sarhan, chief executive of Sarhan Capital in New York.?
DuPont posted a steep drop in earnings on reduced demand for paint pigment, though revenue was ahead of expectations.?
Verizon Communications Inc fell after reporting a steep loss due to pension liabilities and charges related to superstorm Sandy that offset strength in its wireless business. Travelers Cos Inc also posted earnings that were hurt by losses related to Sandy.?
DuPont, Verizon and Travelers are all Dow components, as is Johnson & Johnson , slated to report later Tuesday along with Google and Texas Instruments . Tech earnings will be in particular focus after Intel last week gave a revenue outlook that was below expectations.?
Overall, S&P 500 fourth-quarter earnings are forecast to have risen 2.5 percent, according to Thomson Reuters data. That estimate is above the 1.9 percent forecast from a week ago but well below the 9.9 percent fourth-quarter earnings forecast from October 1, the data showed.?
Monday was a market holiday for Martin Luther King Day in the United States, and also marked the start of a second term for President Barack Obama, who called for aggressive action on climate change, economic equality and the federal budget.?
"It remains a question whether Obama will be able to deliver on his agenda, but a sector like solar power companies could continue to be strong as he pushes for action," Sarhan said.?

If you want to staple standard office paper into a booklet you will typically need a long reach stapler?standard desktop staplers are not long enough to staple the middle of a page. Specialized booklet staplers can often cost $25 or more, but if you have access to a bit of aluminum rectangular tubing, a hacksaw, and a drill you can augment a cheap $2 dollar-store stapler into having a much longer reach.
Instructables user kenyer basically disassembled the donor stapler, cut two pieces of aluminum stock to size and formed them into a U-beam, and attached the two pieces of aluminum stock to the stapler using screws at a 90-degree angle. Now the stapler doesn't need to be as long to access the spine of your booklet.

TIP! When you are going to do landscaping, plan the work to go with the look of your home. Styles that don?t belong together can clash with your home and make it unattractive whereas, a well put together patio and garden can bring the look together.
While there are some people that find home improvement projects to be a bit tedious and impossible for the average Joe, there are several jobs that you could take on yourself, if you understand what it takes from you. The following home improvement tips will show you that anyone can participate in improving their home.
TIP! If you do not want to paint, consider wallpaper. It allows you to boost the look of your whole house.
Get no-VOC paints for your home. No-Voc paints are free of harmful chemicals: this is better for the environment and for your health. They work just as well as regular paints and only cost a little more.
TIP! Landscaping your property can really enhance the visual appeal of your home. A good accompaniment to your property would be adding pretty flowers, mulches, plants, vines, shrubs and some nice stones to give an updated look to your landscape.
When you want to paint the outside of a house, you have to get high quality paint for it. Using a quality paint means the paint job is going to last longer. Even though it costs more to get high quality paint, it goes on quicker and last longer than lower quality paint. You should invest in better paint because it will save you down the line.
TIP! This causes the bristles to bend and erode more quickly. It should always be hung up so bristles will work great by staying straight.
Think about buying matching metal fixtures as a fast, cost-effective method of updating your bathrooms. You can buy bathroom fixtures such as towel racks and cabinet knobs in all kinds of different styles. Some home improvement stores sell these items as a package; this is a good way to save money.
TIP! When finally deciding to locate a contractor, take the time to interview all of the potential company members in your local area and find a professional sharing similar ideals as your own. Make sure they are familiar with renovations concerning homes like your own.
You can easily make your own window screen replacement if you are not able to find one in the right size. All window sizes can be cut via frame kits and then you just have use cording to actual attach the screen. Your window may need a special screen type, but you can still make an external screen using adapters.
TIP! If your window blinds look torn or battered, replacing these can add to the appearance of your home. Over time, blinds can become faded by the sun, and damaged thanks to children and pets.
If you are thinking about home improvement, you might be overwhelmed by everything that is required. A good amount of preparation and planning is always important, but you also need guidance to get your plans headed in the right direction for your specific project. These pieces of advice are excellent beginning points that will provide you with all the knowledge necessary for making the best possible decisions in home improvement.

Lance Armstrong, who admitted to doping, may or may not hope to mount a comeback in sports. But here's one profession that seems to provide a relatively easy path to redemption: politics.

It's a funny quip, of course ? but it also happens to have more than a grain of truth to it. For public figures who have experienced humiliating falls from grace ? often involving confessions of wrongdoing and tearful apologies ? there may be no more forgiving profession than politics.?
Just this week, former South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford (R) ? whose infamous 2009 Appalachian Trail trip turned out to be a visit to his Argentine mistress ? announced he will attempt to return to Congress, where he served from 1995 to 2001, by seeking the seat vacated by now-Sen. Tim Scott (R).?
?We all hope for redemption, we all hope for second chances,? Mr. Sanford told a local TV station in an interview. ?Whether or not I?m granted one, time will tell. But what I would say is, it?s a fresh start in that, you know, after you have failed at something, I think you see life through a different prism. So the prism I have is maybe with a little bit greater humility and a little bit more reserve, but it is to say, ?Well, can I take what I learned on the way up and on the way down; can I take what I learned in Congress and the governorship and apply it?? ?
If Sanford succeeds, he'll join a long list of men who've?resurrected their political careers after highly publicized (most often extramarital and usually not illegal) missteps.?
To name just a few of the most prominent: There are former President Clinton (survived an affair with an intern and impeachment proceedings; is now about to receive a "father of the year" award, with approval ratings at an all-time high of 69 percent); Sen. David Vitter (R) of Louisiana (won reelection handily after overcoming a prostitution scandal); former Rep. Barney Frank (D) of Massachusetts (held a long and distinguished career in the House after it was revealed his gay lover was running an escort ring out of his house; is now a leading contender to fill an interim Senate post in Massachusetts); and former House Speaker Newt Gingrich (was a presidential hopeful in 2012 ? and won the South Carolina primary ? after he'd left the House admitting to infidelity and having been formally disciplined on ethics charges).
It was even reported this week that former Rep. Anthony Weiner (D) of New York (who resigned after it was revealed he'd been sending risqu? pictures of himself via Twitter to women who were not his wife) has reserved the domain name AnthonyWeiner2013.com and continues to maintain office space in New York City for a possible mayoral campaign. So far, however, Mr. Weiner has not indicated any intention to run.
We confess, we're not entirely sure what to make of this phenomenon.?Much has been written over the years about how the American people are unusually forgiving and, indeed, often seem to root for "second chances." Others have pointed out that, in this age of 24/7 news, the spotlight's glare can be intense and cruel when a scandal breaks, but it also moves on quickly ? and the public can have a relatively short memory.?
Either way, the ease with which many have been able to mount political comebacks after a scandal is pretty striking when you consider that elective office, unlike other careers, requires a literal vote of confidence from vast numbers of constituents.?
There do seem to be some rules, though, for mounting a successful political comeback. As a prerequisite, you must own up to what you did and show genuine remorse. But, paradoxically, you also can't seem too overcome by shame: You need to indicate that you've moved on and that you expect others to, as well.?
The nature of the scandal also clearly makes a difference. Scandals involving homosexual activity have proved far more difficult to overcome, particularly for Republicans (see former Idaho Sen. Larry Craig and former Florida Rep. Mark Foley, among others). Former California Rep. Gary Condit (D) was cleared in the death of intern Chandra Levy, for which another man was convicted ? but the murder of a young woman, with whom he'd apparently had an inappropriate relationship, still proved impossible for him to get beyond.
And it is certainly harder ? though not impossible ? for elected officials to get past illegal activity (on the local level, former D.C. Mayor Marion Barry ? who went to jail on drug charges, was subsequently reelected as mayor, and now sits on the city council ? comes to mind).?
Finally, there do seem to be some "moral decency" limits as to what the public is willing to forgive. Former North Carolina Sen. John Edwards (D) may be off the hook, legally, for his affair with a videographer working for his presidential campaign. But the deep public sympathy for his late wife, Elizabeth, who was fighting cancer while the extramarital affair was taking place, seems likely to prohibit any sort of political comeback for him.
You never know, though.?

As cell phones, iPods and laptops creep steadily into every corner of modern life, America's national parks have stayed largely off the digital grid, among the last remaining outposts of ringtone-free human solitude.
For better or worse, that may soon change.
Under pressure from telecommunications companies and a growing number of park visitors who feel adrift without mobile-phone reception, the airwaves in such grand getaway destinations as Yellowstone National Park may soon be abuzz with new wireless signals.
That prospect has given pause to a more traditional cohort of park visitors who cherish the unplugged tranquility of the great outdoors, fearing an intrusion of mobile phones ??and the sound of idle chatter ??will diminish their experience.
Some have mixed emotions. Stephanie Smith, a 50-something Montana native who visits Yellowstone as many as six times a year, said she prefers the cry of an eagle to ring tones.
But she also worries that future generations may lose their appreciation for the value of nature and the need to preserve America's outdoor heritage if a lack of technology discourages them from visiting.
"You have to get there to appreciate it," Smith said. "It's a new world ??and technology is a part of it."
Balancing the two aesthetics has emerged as the latest challenge facing the National Park Service as managers in at least two premier parks, Yellowstone and Glacier national parks, consider recent requests to install new telecommunications towers or upgrade existing ones.
There is no system-wide rule governing cellular facilities in the 300 national parks, national monuments and other units the agency administers nationwide. Wireless infrastructure decisions are left up to the managers of individual park units.
The agency's mission statement requires it to protect park resources and the visitor experience, but each individual experience is unique, said Lee Dickinson, a special-uses program manager for the Park Service.
"I've had two visitors calling me literally within hours of each other who wanted exactly the opposite experience: One saying he didn't vacation anywhere without electronic access and the other complaining he was disturbed by another park visitor ordering pizza on his cell phone," Dickinson said.
Can?you hear me now?
Wireless supporters say more is at stake than the convenience of casual phone conversations. Cellular providers say new wireless infrastructure will boost public safety by improving communications among park rangers and emergency responders.
They argue that the ability to download smartphone applications that can deliver instant information on plants and animals will also enrich park visitors' experiences.
"Our customers are telling us that having access to technology will enhance their visit to wild areas," said Bob Kelley, spokesman for Verizon Wireless, which is seeking to install a new 100-foot cell tower at Yellowstone.
Rural communities that border the national parks also stand to benefit from enlarged cellular coverage areas.
On the other side of the debate, outdoor enthusiasts worry that bastions of quiet reflection could be transformed into noisy hubs where visitors yak on cell phones and fidget with electronic tablets, detracting from the ambience of such natural wonders as Yellowstone's celebrated geyser Old Faithful.
Expanding cellular reception may even compromise safety by giving some tourists a false sense of security in the back country, where extremes in weather and terrain test even the most skilled outdoorsman, according to the National Parks Conservation Association.
Tim Stevens, the association's Northern Rockies director, said distractions like meandering moose already challenge the attention of motorists clogging park roads at the height of the summer tourist season.
"People brake in the middle of the road to watch animals. The added distraction of a wireless signal ??allowing a driver to text Aunt Madge to say how great the trip is ??could have disastrous consequences," he said.
Yellowstone already offers some limited mobile-phone service, afforded by four cellular towers previously erected in developed sections of the park.
But vast swathes of America's oldest national park, which spans nearly 3,500 square miles across the states of Wyoming, Montana and Idaho, still lack wireless reception in an age dominated by Wi-Fi and iPad users who expect access even in the most remote locations.
Park officials see definite signs that a portion of the roughly 3 million annual visitors to Yellowstone, which crafted a wireless plan in 2008, are finding the lack of cell phone coverage disconcerting.
Park spokesman Al Nash said he routinely fields calls from anxious relatives of Yellowstone visitors unable to contact their loved ones.
"They say, 'My gosh, my niece, daughter or parents went to Yellowstone, and we haven't heard from them for three days,'" he said.?

PRISTINA (Reuters) - Three Kosovo government vehicles were torched overnight, police said on Friday, in an attack that appeared to be in protest against European Union-mediated talks between Serbia and its former southern province.
Kosovo Prime Minister Hashim Thaci and his Serbian counterpart, Ivica Dacic, held talks late into the night in Brussels, as part of an EU push to normalize relations between the Balkan neighbors.
The talks are highly unpopular in Kosovo, which declared independence in 2008 but is not recognized by Serbia.
Kosovo's ethnic Albanian majority says it has nothing to discuss with former master Belgrade, which lost control over the territory in 1999 after NATO air strikes to halt a brutal Serbian counter-insurgency war.
Two Kosovo government cars were torched the last time Thaci and Dacic met, on December 4. Three were burned overnight on Friday in the capital Pristina, "all within 20 minutes of each other", police spokesman Agron Borovci said.
Kosovo Albanians fear that Thaci's government will make concessions on a small, Serb-populated pocket of northern Kosovo that Serbia retained de facto control of even after the war.
The EU says the north must reintegrate with the rest of Kosovo and wants progress before it moves ahead with Serbia's bid to join the bloc.
Serbia is seeking autonomy for the region but has offered to recognize the authority of Thaci's government over the entire territory.
EU foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton, who is chairing the talks, said on Friday that they had reached a "provisional understanding" on the collection of customs duties, levies and value-added tax at the disputed border.
The talks will resume in February. (Reporting by Fatos Bytyci in Pristina and Justyna Pawlak in Brussels; Editing by Matt Robinson and David Goodman)

Notre Dame Athletic Director Jack Swarbrick cited the documentary "Catfish" in trying to explain how he said star linebacker Manti Te'o became the victim of an elaborate hoax that duped him into believing that his online girlfriend died during the 2012 college football season.
"I would refer all of you, if you're not already familiar with it, with both the documentary called 'Catfish,' the MTV show which is a derivative of that documentary, and the sort of associated things you'll find online and otherwise about catfish, or catfishing," Swarbrick told reporters Wednesday.
The 2010 blockbuster film stars Nev Schulman, who was the real-life victim of a "catfish" scam. Schulman wanted to make the documentary to show how he was sucked in by an Internet pretender -- or a "catfish" -- who built an elaborate fake life.
Schulman made the documentary as he was falling for someone named "Megan," a gorgeous 20-something from Michigan. Their online relationship blossomed until Schulman confronted "Megan."
"Megan" turned out to be a middle-aged mom of two named Angela Wesselman, who later said she had been diagnosed with schizophrenia.
Inside 'Catfish': A Tale of Twisted Cyber-Romance
"It was different. It was something new. It was a little mysterious," Schulman told ABC News in an earlier interview, describing his reaction before he discovered Megan's true identity.
Now, a much wiser Schulman is helping others catch the "catfish" in his new hit series on MTV inspired by the real-life documentary, "Catfish: The TV Show."
'Catfish' Stars Nev Schulman's Advice for Online Dating
In one episode, Schulman meets Sunny, who says she has been dating a medical student online named "Jameson" for eight months.
"He's going to be an anesthesiologist. He does online classes," Sunny says of "Jameson" in the episode.
Schulman convinces Sunny to take a road trip to meet "Jameson" face to face and and Sunny later finds out "Jameson" was really a woman who was pretending to be a man online for at least four years.
"I mean who does that," Sunny said in the episode.
For Te'o, 21, the scam was allegedly worse. The Hawaiian said during the season that his girlfriend, Lennay Kekua, died of leukemia in September on the same day Te'o's grandmother died, triggering an outpouring of support for Te'o at Notre Dame and in the media.
"If the person you're talking to has a series of family incidents, this is something to watch out for," Schulman said.
As more become connected through various social media outlets, Schulman says these "catfish" hoaxes will continue.
"So long as we're not looking people in the eye face-to-face, there's always going be room, a lot of room for deception," he said.

Zhou Kehua, a native of Shapingba district in Chongqing and the prime suspect in 10 murders in Chongqing, Nanjing, and Changsha over eight years, was shot dead by two police in a residential alleyway in the Shapingba district of Chongqing on Aug 14.
Four days earlier, he allegedly robbed and killed two people in front of a bank. He robbed a handbag from a woman and injured a security guard who tried to chase him. He also shot and killed a rail police officer that day.
Zhou usually targeted people withdrawing money from banks and was adept at dodging police manhunts.
The indictment by prosecutors at Tuesday's hearing said Zhang met Zhou in her hometown Yibin in 2012.
Zhang was working at a massage parlor in Yibin when Zhou met her, Huaxi Metropolis Daily in Chengdu reported. Zhou later became Zhang's regular customer at the massage parlor.
Prosecutors told the court that Zhang and Zhou started living together and Zhang followed her boyfriend to Chongqing in July 2012 to make money. Zhou also promised to pay the medical bills to cure her epilepsia, a brain disorder in which the sufferer experiences motor epileptic seizures, a condition Zhang has had since childhood.?
?
Prosecutors told the court that Zhang saw Zhou with a gun during the period they lived together.
On Aug 10, hours after Zhou allegedly committed a robbery and double murder, prosecutors said he met Zhang outside a hotel in the Shapingba district and gave her 60,000 yuan ($9,600).
Zhang kept in touch with Zhou through text messages and sent him media reports about the latest efforts of police to find him.
She also gave him makeup so he could disguise himself by covering a distinctive scar, prosecutors said.
When Zhou was shot dead, police found he was in possession of pistols that had been used in two robberies in Chongqing in 2004 and 2005.
In court, Zhang denied that she came to Chongqing with Zhou to make money.
She also denied knowing that the money Zhou gave her came from robberies and said she only knew the money was robbed after reading news reports, according to a media statement from the court.
Zhang was calm and able to clearly articulate herself during the court hearing, according to an eyewitness who did not want to be identified.
The court heard around five hours of evidence on Tuesday. The court will deliver its verdict at a later date.
Zhang's lawyer Yao Fei, from the Zhouji Law Firm in Chengdu, said his client is innocent.
"The two charges cannot stand as there is clear evidence that shows Zhang had no knowledge Zhou was a criminal suspect when she received the money and sent him the text messages," he said in a phone interview.
"The four- to seven-year prison term also seems way too harsh," he added.?
